The Key to Success for your child: Addressing Emotional Regulation First

In my previous post, we dived into the concept of the pyramid of learning. In this post, we will address a critical cornerstone that often is overshadowed but is undoubtedly the crucial foundation for success — emotional regulation. Often times, we only see the by-product of dysregulation: poor executive functionig and "behaivoural challenges".

What is Emotional Regulation?

Emotional regulation encompasses the ability to recognize, understand, and manage one's emotions effectively as well as perceiving potential impact of one's emotions to another person.

Why Emotional Regulation Takes Precedence?

Addressing emotional regulation before tackling executive functioning or behavior is paramount for various reasons:

  • Prevents Triggered Responses : Strong emotional reactions can cloud judgment and trigger impulsive responses, hindering executive functions such as decision-making and problem-solving. By cultivating emotional regulation, individuals can navigate challenges with clarity and composure.

  • Enhances Self-Awareness : Emotional regulation fosters self-awareness, enabling individuals to recognize their emotional states and understand how these states influence their thoughts and actions. This self-awareness is fundamental for effective executive functioning and behavior management.

  • Promotes Resilience : An individual with well-developed emotional regulation skills is better equipped to handle setbacks and adversity. Resilience, a byproduct of emotional regulation, is essential for navigating the complexities of executive functioning and addressing behavioral challenges.

Strategies for Cultivating Emotional Regulation

Occupational therapists, by working alongside other allied health professionals such as psychotherapists and music therapists alike, addresses the importance of the following:

  • Mindfulness Practices : Incorporating mindfulness techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, and body scans can help individuals regulate their emotions by promoting present-moment awareness and reducing reactivity. This is often times led by psychotherapy. Occupational Therapists can also provide strategies in how to implement these practices in your child's daily routine and may sure they have fun while doing it!

  • Emotion Labelling : Encouraging the identification and labelling of emotions can empower individuals to express their feelings constructively and develop a nuanced understanding of their emotional landscape. We often use "the Zones of Regulation", the "Five Point Scale", "How Does My Engine Run" cirriculums, or a combination of strategies to help your child with this.

  • Self-Care Routines : Prioritizing self-care activities such as adequate sleep, healthy nutrition, regular exercise, and social connections can significantly impact emotional regulation by nurturing overall well-being. Sometimes this will mean that we discuss sleep hygiene and ensure that we modified the sleeping environment to maximize your child's sleep in conjunction with other health professionals that may including Naturopathic Doctors and Osteopathic Practitioners.
